From the Commanding Officer
Welcome to Sir Thomas Blackwell's Regiment of Foote; and to the wonderful world of the English Civil War re-enactment. You could be embarking on a journey into this many faceted hobby, which can be enjoyed at any level of involvement.
I am John Harris and have the honour of being Commanding Officer of the Regiment. How did I get here? Well, I've served since 1976 with 2 other regiments in the King’s Army before joining this illustrious regiment in 1983. I started out as a pikeman and rose through the ranks; however I still enjoy mixing it with the pike whenever I have the opportunity. It is a great honour to command the Regiment as well as having responsibility to our members and to the Society.
As you browse through these pages you will be introduced to the various elements of the Regiment wherein we have people from all walks of life and of all ages. I'm sure we can find a niche for you.
Perhaps you would revel in the physical prowess of the push of pike, perhaps as part of the crashing volleys of our renowned musketeers or maybe at the roar of the cannon in our artillery; or perhaps you would prefer the equally important role of a camp follower on the battlefield as a first aider or water carrier, drummer or musician.
Some people indulge in the complexities of the different arms of the Regiment whilst, for others, simply turning up to enjoy the company and camaraderie of our campfire is enough. Whatever your chosen role you can enjoy the sheer escapism of it all.
The true secret of our Regiment is not found in any formal command structure, but in the spirit of co-operation and lunacy that exists between us; we have found that all things can be achieved with teamwork and good cheer.
I hope you will find something within these pages to ignite your enthusiasm and that you will join us and come to many enjoyable events.
Best Wishes
John Harris, Commanding Officer, Sir Thomas Blackwell's Regiment of Foote
